Gallerie d’Italia-Piazza Scala
On November 3, 2011 Gallerie d’Italia-Piazza Scala opened in Milan. This is a new museum that houses a rich collection of artworks from the nineteenth century in the beautiful Anguissola and Brentani palaces overlooking Via Manzoni and Piazza della Scala in Milan. The collection includes 197 outstanding artworks (135 from Fondazione Cariplo’s collection and 62 from Banca Intesa’s collection) that had previously been shown to the public only as part of temporary exhibitions.
Fernando Mazzocca is the curator of this permanent exhibition which opens with 13 Plaster Bas Reliefs by Antonio Canova, includes paintings by Hayez, Induno, Segantini, Morbelli and Previati, and ends with four canvases by Umberto Boccioni. Through the exhibition visitors can discover nineteenth century Milan, a leading centre of the Romanticism and the industrial age. The museum space was cleverly designed by architect Michele De Lucchi.
